Hello, I'm Sheridan!

Welcome to my website! My name is Sheridan Garbe, and I am a student at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), majoring in Public Policy Leadership, International Governance & Policy, and the German language. I have always been passionate about our civic responsibilities and advocating for the special needs population, and I have dedicated my educational path to pursuing a law degree. I hope to become a Judge Advocate General for the United States military, work for the State Department, and possibly run for public office one day.

My Story

Well, hello there! I'm Sheridan Garbe, based in Colleyville, a small town in Texas, and I'd love to share my story with you.

My journey began when I was around two years old, and my mother entered me in a magical competition called "Cinderella." For 12 years, I competed in that pageant, and when I reached the age of six, I was required to enter a talent. I chose ventriloquism, as I had seen another girl perform with her puppet. I wanted nothing more than to have a fabricated friend who came to life when I stopped talking and kept my mouth closed—it changed my life forever.

It all started with a cow puppet named Daisy, until two small "children" named Dolly and Duke made their way to the stage, and my love for entertaining took flight. About that time, there was a significant change in my life with the birth of my little sister Brooke. While more beautiful than words can describe, she was born with an additional chromosome—and along with her, I grew to understand living with Down Syndrome and how that would become a calling for me and a large part of my world.

At an early age, I noticed the way people reacted and interacted with Brooke.  As several realities became clear, one that seemed to loom was that well-intended people unknowingly minimized Brooke’s value because of her disability. As the oldest child, it is second nature to me to protect my younger sibling, especially when there is so much misunderstanding and bias that she cannot control. While sensitivity to people with special needs has come a long way, society’s “kind discrimination” still exists. I decided to turn my sense of frustration into a fierce passion to educate society about true inclusion.

This is the WHY behind my message and the reason I created my program, B.E.E. The One - Be a Friend. Educate. Empower.

THE STORY CONTINUES…

A rising sophomore at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, I am pursuing a major in Public Policy Leadership, International Governance and Policy, German, and working towards a Juris Doctor degree and Master’s in Business Administration to become a Judge Advocate General for the United States military and run for elected office in the future.

I perform with my puppets every chance I get.  In fact, I am excited to hit the stage this July in Tupelo, Mississippi, where I will be performing “A Spoonful of Magic” as Miss University Teen Volunteer, competing for Miss Mississippi Teen Volunteer. I am currently a member of Alpha Phi Sorority, Ole Miss German Club, a National Charity League sustaining member, choir member at Oxford University United Methodist Church, and recently joined Rebels for Christ campus ministry. In my free time, I enjoy researching our family tree through Ancestry.com and learning all I can about European History...especially the Royal Family! I'm a total Anglophile, defined as a lover of British culture, accents, and people.

I am also in the 3% of the population to have Synesthesia!  I'm a proud National Park Service Junior Ranger program participant, an amateur quilter, a theater set designer and costumer, a Disney World performer, and an expert Disney pin trader.
